After the release of the single “Nautilus” in November 2021, Berlin based djent / progressive metal band Dark Side Bright Side propose themselves again with a new song entitled “The Painter Of Ghosts” which will be included in their debut concept album. “The Painter of Ghosts it’s a fictional name representing cancer. The inspiration source of this song was the intent to describe the unfortunate situation in which many inhabitants of the Italian southern region of Calabria are dealing with: the illicit toxic and non toxic waste disposal. The ‘Ndrangheta (southern Italian mafia mob) buys the waste from Italy itself and other European nations, digs it into mountains or throws it into the depths of the Mediterranean sea, polluting the whole ecosystem. The consequences are many, aside from damaging the entire territory the cases of deaths caused by cancer and leukemia are increasing enormously. That’s a massive disaster unknown even to the majority of Italians. Unfortunately these problems are widespread not only in Calabria but all over southern Italy.

The story takes place in the Aspromonte mountains (Calabria, southern Italy). Dug in the mountain there’s a barrel that contains a toxic fluid. Due to a torrential rain and the passage of time, the barrel cracks, and the fluid starts to fall out of it, getting into the river. Once there, the liquid starts infecting anything that is in front of its path. The fluid becomes almost an existing thing, like an entity. The music at this point (uneven meters) tries to recall the scattered movement of the fluid, which somehow, takes the shape of a skull.

Anything that gets in contact with the skull dies; plants, animals, even the bottom of the river gets deeply infected, becoming almost a vector for the “Painter of Ghosts” to spread his venomous shadow. After passing through the valley the skull gets to its final destination, the sea. This section of the song in 6/8 recalls the relentless movement of the waves and the cycle of the tides. Once there, it is basically unstoppable, it will be able to spread everywhere, causing death and grief. The guitar solo was composed to recall the grief and the screams of pain caused by the “Painter of Ghosts”, followed again by the silence of death.”
