Can’t Swim have introduced an upcoming EP titled Foreign Language, which will be released on October 11, 2019 via Pure Noise Records.
“Foreign Language is a record that I felt necessary to put out,” explains Chris LoPorto. “These events in my life that I had never touched on in previous material, that I never had the right words for, finally made sense in the time we are living in now. To be able to write music honestly and to be transparent with our agenda, has always been the goal and ‘Foreign Language’ is the best interpretation of that yet. It is very easy to fall under criticism and do what you “think” you should do with your art – if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it – and while I too am a victim of these tropes and have hit roadblocks creativity because of the pressure, I can proudly say that this release came so naturally and organically, playing to our strengths but also letting the mistakes and mishaps have their place on the recordings”
On the lyrics of “Filthy Rich”, LoPorto says, “Money makes people do awful things. It can turn friends into enemies and family members into distant strangers. The song is about feeling manipulated, used, and taken advantage of by someone who is close to you. The bridge always felt a bit empty and uninteresting in the demo stage to me but luckily my good friend Spencer Pollard, whose band Trash Talk I briefly played in years ago, was in town and came by the studio to sing on the song. After that it finally felt complete.
In addition to Pollard, fans will recognize other voices contributed to Foreign Language. Adam Lazzarra of Taking Back Sunday, Frank Carter, and Drew Dijorio of Stray From the Path all came to round out the new EP.
Can’t Swim is: Chris LoPorto (lead vocals), Mike Sanchez (guitar), Danny Rico (guitar), Greg McDevitt (bass) and Michael Sichel (drums). The band calls Keansburg, New Jersey home.
